Introducing Louisville Chiropractor, Dr. Nicolai Hansen
"I'm becoming a turtle," my mother said, but she wasn't laughing. She worked as a checker at the local supermarket in the days before scanners. She would have to read the price on the item, often lifting the item to see it, punch the price into the register and then pass the item behind her to be bagged. (which she usually did herself)
Then the problem began. First it was neck and shoulder pain but by the time I spoke to her the pain was going down into her left arm and her shoulder was drawing up so that it appeared that her head was drawing down into her shoulders - like a turtle. She had seen her medical doctor but he couldn't explain it - x-rays were normal. The drugs didn't help. She couldn't take time off, my parents needed the paycheck, so work was torture. Finally, one of her regular customers insisted that she go see Dr. Lalli.
Joseph Lalli, DC, my future mentor, was a chiropractor of the old school - no long drawn out care plans, no waiting three days to adjust you - in short he had a respect for his patients and an honest desire to get them well. Over the next month as I spoke to my mother over the phone (I was in the Coast Guard then) she reported a steady improvement till she stopped acting like a turtle and got rid of the pain.
I was curious about why my mother developed her "turtlitis". She hadn't fallen or been injured in any way. According to her medical doctor there was "nothing wrong". I asked her why Dr. Lalli felt she had suffered so much. She told me that he couldn't be sure but it may have been due to some old accident or injury. Well, I had just had a motorcycle accident and, after a broken collarbone healed up, I was crooked enough that every inspecting officer complained about me not standing straight. I wasn't having any pain but I made an appointment with Dr. Lalli on my next trip home. It was a visit that would change my life.
Dr. Lalli spoke about how the body heals itself - unless there is some interference. He told me that the nervous system is the primary system in the body. (It controls everything) Any interference in the nervous system will interfere with all the processes of the body - including healing. Besides getting educated I got healed - no inspecting officer ever complained about me being crooked again. More than that though I had awoken to a new way of looking at healthcare not sickcare. Dr. Lalli was a unique individual, he spoke from the heart, he gave me a sense of mission.
When my second hitch was up I was told that my GI Bill educational benefits would be taken away if not used by 1989. I got out and started my undergraduate work at William Paterson College (Wayne, NJ) and Rutgers. In 1988 I entered National College of Chiropractic where I completed my BS degree and earned my DC.
Dr. Lalli died in the mid-1980's but I've tried to model myself after him. I have achieved an "Advanced Proficiency Rating" in Activator Technique, something few other doctors have. I regularly attend continuing education seminars and subscribe to several journals. Since graduation (1992) I've worked hard to keep abreast of modern research but try to square that with the guiding principals Dr. Lalli talked about, primarily the body heals itself. Look for the interference that keeps that from happening and try to remove that.
